Information Center for People with Disabilities (ICPD)

The ICPD is an award winning state-of-the-art technology center designed to meet the information needs of people with physical, visual, hearing, and developmental disabilities. We provide library materials, assistive services, and Librarians to answer requests for information, and volunteers to provide one-on-one assistance with the technology and basic computer instruction. Users are given 2.0 hours of free computer use per day. If you are interested in volunteering, read more about our Volunteer Program.

  • Assistive services include adjustable workstations, alternative keyboards and mice, CCTV magnifier, reachers/grabbers, Reading Edge Text to Speech, and a walker and wheelchair for use in the library.
  • Assistive technology includes Dragon Naturally Speaking, JAWS, MagicCursor, Screen Doors, Dwell Clicker 2, Word Q and Speak Q, WYNN Wizard, ZoomText, TrackerPro, Interpretype machine for the hearing impaired, and more.
  • Special collections include large print, braille, and digital talking books.

Homebound Readers Services

Homebound Readers Services provides library materials to customers in Long Beach who are confined to their homes by an illness or an injury, either chronic or temporary. Materials are personally selected by a librarian for each homebound reader and mailed out every other week at no charge. To learn more, complete and submit the Homebound Readers Interest form or leave a message at the phone number above.  

If you are a current Meals on Wheels customer, ask them about Books on Wheels. The Library works with Books on Wheels to offer dinner and a book, or dinner and a movie, to Meals on Wheels program customers. Call Meals on Wheels at (562) 439-5000 to sign up. 

Michelle Obama Branch Library - Assistive Technology Workstations
The new Michelle Obama Branch Library  provides assistive and adaptive technologies for people with disabilities. In addition, the hearing loop technology is available for people with hearing impairment.
