The Library offers several types of library cards providing various levels of access:
Full access: for adults and for youth under 18 with parental consent. Includes access to all library resources, including the internet. Five item use: for adults and for youth who do not provide the ID required for full access, but who still want to check out library materials. Computer use: for adults and for youth under 18 with parental consent. This card will not allow the library card holder to check out library materials. Verification of address and a California drivers license or ID number and/or social security number are not required for a computer use only card. However, parents or legal guardians must sign the computer use only card application for all youth under 18. Children's collection: for youth under 18 with parental consent. This card allows youth to borrow children's materials only. Parents must meet with a librarian to discuss this option. Children's and adult collection: for adults and for youth under 18 with parental consent. No internet access. Parents must meet with a librarian to discuss this option.
First time borrowers may check out two items on a new library account. The Library issues new cards directly to the borrower. Library cards are for self-use only, and not transferable even within the family. This policy exists to protect each patron's borrowing privileges and from others' misuse and/or fraudulent use of library cards. An exception to this policy will only be allowed for parents of youth card holders. I.D. Requirements Any California resident may get a library card. Adults must show picture identification with a current home address. Identification can be a California ID or a California drivers license. If the ID doesn't show the current home address, the following alternatives can be used for verification:
A printed personal check - A property tax receipt
- A recent utility or phone bill
- Any first-class mail with a current postmark
Youth under 18 must present a completed application with their parent or guardian signature and California ID number. Students with California or school ID should show this ID along with a completed, signed application. To protect each patron's borrowing privileges, the library's policy is that library cards are not transferable, even within the family. This policy aims to protect the Library and individuals from other's misuse of library cards. An exception to this policy will only be allowed when the parent listed on a child's library card account wishes to check out materials using that child's card. This exception is allowed because the parent listed on the child's library account is ultimately the responsible party for all materials checked out on the child's card. Information for Parents The reading and viewing activities of youth under 18 are the responsibility of parents and guardians. The library does not assume that responsibility. Library staff do not act in loco parentis.
