As librarians we share your concerns about people's rights and access to information and the well-being of children.

Public libraries provide people with the resources they need to read, learn and connect to the full spectrum of ideas and information that is essential to our democracy.

Libraries have always been a forum for ideas, even those that may be unorthodox, unpopular or offensive to some. This same policy applies today with electronic media. Each individual will choose for himself or herself which option is best.

In the case of children, the parent or guardian is responsible for the Internet information accessed by their children just as they have always been responsible for monitoring the books their children read, the music they listen to, etc.

The best filter for children is parental involvement. Recent technology upgrades make it possible to offer options for Internet access.

These choices are:

1. Full access to all library resources, including the Internet, for adults and children under 18, with parental consent;

2. Computer access only (for those who do not have a library card) for adults and children under 18, with parental consent;

3. Access to the children's collection and restricted Internet computers, with parental consent;

4. Check out privileges (adult and children's collections) and no Internet access;

5. Access to the children's collection only. The Long Beach Public Library strives to provide a full range of information in all formats and to offer patrons a choice of options that best meet their individual and their family needs.
