Bret Harte Neighborhood Library


Getting There History Located on the west side of Long Beach, the Bret Harte Branch Library had its beginnings as the West Willow Station, opening in rented quarters on January 3, 1934. In the years that followed, it grew and moved twice into larger storefronts on Willow Street and also operated the Silverado and Cabrillo Stations on Santa Fe Avenue.August 9, 1957 marked the dedication of a permanent new building, which retains its contemporary look after more than 40 years at the present location. Named for the writer of short stories of the old west, the Bret Harte Library is a lively neighborhood library, serving the needs of a diverse community.A garden of drought-tolerant and California native plants, grant-funded by the Long Beach Water Department, enhances this community library. City Council Representative Long Beach City Council 7th District, James Johnson Collections - Children: Materials for pleasure and homework support, including fiction and non-fiction, beginning readers, picture books, folk and fairy tales, concept books, board books, graphic novels, magazines, Spanish language materials, audio books, CDs, and DVDs.
- Young Adult:Fiction and non-fiction, graphic novels, manga, and magazines.
- Adult: Popular fiction, classics, and non-fiction, periodicals and newspapers, large print materials, audio books and playaways, CDs, and DVDs.
- Special resources: Spanish language collection, a Filipino culture collection, and African-American materials.
Programs - Programs include summer reading programs for children, teens, and adults, and special programs throughout the year.
- Teachers and group leaders are welcome to schedule a time to bring classes or groups to the library. Please contact the children's librarian, (562) 570-1044.
- The Family Learning Center provides homework assistance for students in grade K - 8. Parents are encouraged to use the library with their children. The center is staffed with homework helpers to provide help with homework assignments and computer instruction. Call the library to confirm days and times, (562) 570-1044.
- Basic computer instruction is customized to meet patron needs.
Facilities - The community meeting room has a capacity of 80 and is available on a rental basis.
- The library has an ADA accessible entrance and restrooms.
- An outdoor bookdrop located near the front entrance is open when the library is closed.
Equipment - This neighborhood library offers computer access to the library catalog, a community resource file, and various on-line reference resources as well as Internet, Word and Excel.A valid library card number is needed to access the computers.Access is on a first come basis and is limited to 30 minutes per day.Printing cost is $.15 per page.
- The Family Learning Center has Homework Helpers who read with students and help with basic homework assignments.The FLC also has English-As-A-Second-Language (ESL) software available for parents and students wishing to improve their English language skills.Instruction in basic computer skills is available by appointment.
- A photocopy machine makes black and white copies for $.15 per page.
