History Brewitt originally opened in August 1948 as the East Long Beach Branch. In 1944 the branch was re-named in honor of Theodora Brewitt, under whose direction as City Librarian from 1921 to 1950 the Long Beach Public Library system gained national recognition. The Brewitt branch was designed to absorb and continue the combined services of two smaller branches in the area. Brewitt Branch Library has continued its tradition as a small, friendly neighborhood branch. Today, Brewitt serves a large multi-ethnic community, providing popular reading materials, information, and a variety of resources and programs targeting both youth and adults. Library was designed to combine the services of two smaller branches in the area. In 1917 east Long Beach was served by a small storefront library at Anaheim Road and Loma, the Zafaria Branch Library. Eventually a new building, the East Branch, went up at 1215 Freeman Avenue, only to be destroyed by the 1933 earthquake. Further to the southeast the Belmont Branch at 393 Termino Avenue had been serving the community since 1923. The Brewitt Neighborhood Library replaced both and has continued in their tradition as a small, friendly neighborhood branch.
