African American Heritage Society

The African American Heritage Society of Long Beach was organized in May of 1997 as a financial support group for the African American Resource Area at the Burnett Neighborhood Library.

Mission:

  • To raise money to purchase materials for the African-American Resource Area
  • To encourage the public to donate books to the library
  • To promote the reading of Black history at home and in school

The African-American Resource Area includes the following special collections:

  • African-American Heritage Collection of Non-fiction
  • Fiction by Black authors
  • The Tucker & Hale Collection of Black Women's History
  • Gifts of Heritage (gift books about Black history for children)
  • The Black Heritage Video Collection
