The African American Heritage Society of Long Beach was organized in May of 1997 as a financial support group for the African American Resource Area at the Burnett Neighborhood Library.
Mission:
- To raise money to purchase materials for the African-American Resource Area
- To encourage the public to donate books to the library
- To promote the reading of Black history at home and in school
The African-American Resource Area includes the following special collections:
- African-American Heritage Collection of Non-fiction
- Fiction by Black authors
- The Tucker & Hale Collection of Black Women's History
- Gifts of Heritage (gift books about Black history for children)
- The Black Heritage Video Collection
